For many years, asbestos has been used as the friction material in clutches, brake linings, and gaskets including engine bay heat shields and sound deadening material in vehicles. The use of asbestos in these components was prohibited in 1999, with the exception of pre 1973 vehicles. They could continue to be fitted with brake shoes containing asbestos material until 2004 and is still found to be present in some current parts material depending on the country of manufacture, and it is possible that some vehicles do still contain these asbestos containing products.

The Australian government are very strict on asbestos checks for all vehicles entering Australia, and our Laboratory is UKAS accredited, which is the highest asbestos approval accreditation in the UK and is approved by NATA and the Australian government.

We have been testing vehicles for many years ranging from historic Veteran and Vintage cars including: 1904 Peugeot ,1906 Rainier, Bentleys, Rolls Royce’s, Aston Martins, Ferraris, Porsche, many modern cars, and pickups, and these are the areas that we must check for asbestos.

Vehicle Asbestos check list

  • Engine gaskets

  • Head gasket

  • Exhaust manifold gaskets and heat shields

  • Cylinder head cover gasket

  • Obvious rope gaskets to exhaust system

  • Material in engine compartment/Engine cover

  • Brake pads one side only, front and rear

  • Air filter cleaner

  • Clutch

We take a tiny sample of material and test it in our laboratory. Accessing these areas is a specialist task and we work very closely with a well‑established vehicle restoration company that have a superb team and workshop facilities, to expose the areas we need to sample, and If we discover that any of the parts that we have tested contain asbestos, they will provide a quotation to replace it.

We can also collect vehicles anywhere in the UK for testing and after testing, deliver them to the port, and at every stage, we will provide a quotation for your approval prior to any work undertaken.
